A Republican Debate
Note: This essay was written 2/25/16 after a Republican candidates TV debate. It is now being published because it has a couple of interesting points.
It seemed like everyone was yelling at each other, like little kids.
Rubio is now viciously attacking Trump. Rubio was playing the nice guy before (“I just debate the issues, not make personal attacks”) — just like Kasich is doing (who is under 5% in the polls). But Rubio soon found out that “nice guy” tactic didn’t work.
But now he’s finding out that the tactic of making silly attacks on Trump works even less. It turns out that Trump is very talented in finding his opponents weak spot with his personal — and entertaining — personal attacks. And Trump is coated with Teflon when his opponents try to make personal attacks against him. Trumps opponents often seem juvenile, while Trump seems comedic.
As H.L. Menken once said, politics is mostly entertainment. And these playground verbal fights are very entertaining. Perhaps the peak of this entertainment was when Rubio accused Trump of being so upset he wet his pants.
